Generation 1: Traditional Cross-Pin Type (Pin & Block / Cross U-Joint)

  • Mechanism: Uses a central cross-pin block, similar to an automotive drive shaft.
  • Pros:
    • Pros: Simple design, basic durability.
  • Cons:
    • Limited working angles, non-constant velocity (jerky movement at large angles), and a bulky profile unsuitable for tight spaces.

Generation 2: Ball Type Universal Joint (Ball U-Joint / Ball Swivel)

To address the stiff rotation and angle limitations of cross-pins, ball-type structures became widely adopted in the mid-to-late 20th century.

  • Mechanism: Incorporates an internal spherical ball with curved grooves enclosed by a sleeve.
